Tracking sync is the automatic write-back of a carrier tracking number from the fulfillment system to the store order it belongs to. It is what marks an order shipped and triggers the shipping notification the customer receives.
Why the write-back is the whole feature
Getting a tracking number is trivial. Getting it onto the right order, in the store, without a human retyping it, is the part that decides whether your support inbox is manageable. An unsynced tracking number means the order still reads Processing days after it left the building, and every customer looking at that status writes to ask where their parcel is.
The tracking number is also your primary evidence in a dispute. When a cardholder claims an item never arrived, what wins the case is a tracking number tied to that order number with a delivery scan at the cardholder's address. If tracking lives in a spreadsheet rather than on the order, you can usually still find it, but you are finding it under a deadline with a fee already debited.
Sync should also be idempotent. Re-running a shipment update ought to overwrite the same field rather than append a second number, because a customer looking at two tracking numbers on one order will pick the wrong one. The Shopify to WooCommerce migration guide covers what to check when moving a store between platforms without losing the write-back.
How it works here
The integration runs inside WooCommerce, so the tracking number is written onto the Woo order itself. Woo sends the shipping notification, under your store name and from your sending domain, and the order status flips to Completed on its own.
