The MATCH list is a Mastercard-operated database in which acquiring banks record merchants whose accounts were terminated for cause. Its full name is the Member Alert to Control High-Risk Merchants list, and a listing generally persists for five years.
Who lists you, and what it does
You are not listed by the card network; you are listed by your acquirer, after they terminate your account, under one of a defined set of reason codes. Excessive chargebacks and misrepresentation of the business are two of the more common. Other acquirers query the database during underwriting, which is why a listing usually shows up as applications being declined without much explanation.
A listing is not permanent and it is not unchallengeable. Retention is generally five years. If you believe you were listed in error, the route is through the acquirer that listed you, because they own the entry and they are the only party who can correct it. Start by requesting the reason code in writing, because you cannot dispute a listing you cannot characterise.
The way to stay off it is unglamorous and it is the only way that works: describe your business accurately on the application, keep the dispute ratio under the threshold, and do not sell what the agreement prohibits. Attempting to disguise the business category to obtain or keep processing violates the processor's terms and is itself one of the reasons an acquirer lists a merchant. The guide to payments for peptide brands covers doing this the durable way.
