Lot traceability is the ability to follow a specific production lot from the supplier who made it through to every order that shipped a unit from it. It is what lets a fulfillment operation answer which customers received which lot without guessing.
The question traceability exists to answer
There is one question a fulfillment operation has to be able to answer on short notice: which orders shipped from lot X. Everything traceability requires exists to make that query possible, which means recording the lot on receipt, recording it again on the outbound order, and never letting two lots of the same item sit in one unlabeled bin.
Traceability runs in both directions. Forward, from a lot to the orders that carried it, is what you use when a lot has to be pulled. Backward, from a single customer order to the lot inside it, is what you use when one customer asks for their documentation and you need to hand them the certificate for the unit actually in their hand rather than the current one.
The failure mode is almost always the bin, not the software. Two lots mixed on one shelf means every order from that shelf is traceable to two possible lots, which is the same as traceable to none.
