A backup supplier is a second, already-qualified source for a material you sell, kept ready so a stockout at the primary source does not stop shipments. Already-qualified is the operative word: the source is tested and approved before it is needed, not found in a hurry afterward.
Qualified in advance, or not qualified
A supplier you have not bought from is not a backup, it is a phone number. Qualification means you have run their material through the same testing you apply to your primary, confirmed the paperwork arrives in the form you need it, and know their lead time from a real order rather than a quote. Anything less and your contingency plan is a hope with a contact name.
The reason this is urgent in practice is that stockouts do not arrive politely. A primary source goes quiet in the same week your best-selling item is moving, and the qualification work that takes three weeks calmly takes three weeks in a panic too. The work has to be done while nothing is wrong.
For a brand on a dropship model this is not your job, it is your supplier's, which makes it a question to ask during diligence rather than a project to run. Ask which items have a second source qualified and what the switchover looks like.
