Research-use-only (RUO) labeling marks a material and its paperwork as intended for laboratory research and not for human or animal use. It is a labeling and documentation standard that governs what the label, the listing, and the packaging are allowed to say.
The label and the listing have to agree
RUO labeling is not a sticker you add and then forget. The statement has to appear on the product label, and everything else you publish about that product has to be consistent with it: the product page, the category description, the email, the ad, and anything a customer support reply says. A label that reads research use only above a listing that implies otherwise is not an RUO listing.
This is where most brands get into trouble, and rarely on the label itself. It is the marketing copy that drifts, because copy is written by someone who wants to sell and is not reading the label while they write. The fix is procedural rather than clever: one person owns compliance sign-off on published copy, and nothing goes live without it.
The labeling standard is also the reason a fulfillment operator will not print artwork that contradicts it.
